Having a working printer is important when you're trying to prepare a speech for work, or when you urgently need to print out your child's bus schedule. But printer problems can sometimes be challenging to diagnose, and you might not know if you need replacement parts.

Here are three signs you can look for to decide if your printer needs a new toner cartridge to run smoothly.

1. Your Page Looks Like It's Leaking

As the toner cartridge empties out, you may notice that the toner seems to not be distributed across the cartridge evenly. You can fix this by removing the cartridge and gently sliding it from side to side to spread the toner out.

You'll know that the problem is resolved once the toner spreads across the entirety of the page instead of gathering in one section. Be sure to have it replaced as soon as possible, as this is a sign that your toner cartridge is running low.

2. It Doesn't Print the Whole Page

If you notice that parts of the page appear to have empty spots, or it appears that images or letters are fading into the page, then it's likely that your toner cartridge is nearing empty and needs to be replaced.

If you're unsure after inspecting the page, you can go into your print settings and run a test page to evaluate the quality.

3. You've Received a Notification

Most printers are capable of detecting toner levels automatically, and they will either beep or provide a desktop notification to let you know that there's a problem with your toner cartridge.

Be sure to check your user manual to see if there is an option available for you to modify these alerts. In some cases, you can customize them so that you are notified when the toner has dropped to a certain level.

Depending on your usage, you might want to be notified sooner or later so that you can keep your budget in mind. Also, be sure to look for bulk deals, sometimes suppliers will provide discounts if you buy multiple toner cartridges at the same time.

Running out of toner can be stressful if you're on a deadline, so be sure to look out for these signs so you can have a backup cartridge ready to go.
